Freelance news & features writing, MoneySavingExpert.com (ongoing) 

I regularly work onsite at the UK’s leading personal finance and consumer rights website reporting on breaking and off-diary news stories. 

Notable work includes an in-depth investigation into failures by HM Revenue & Customs in administering the Tax-Free Childcare scheme. This work was picked up by national newspapers, leading the issue to be investigated by the Treasury Select Committee.

I have also written and edited a number of the site’s accessible and actionable subject guides, including pieces on EU-wide mobile phone roaming rules, and cheap holiday guides.

Other responsibilities have included include sub-editing and proofing features.

Acting editor,
Hospital Times (Dorson West)
(Feb - April 2018)

I was brought on as acting editor (for a fixed term) to supervise the relaunch of Hospital Times, a trade magazine aimed at middle management in NHS acute hospitals across the UK.

Here I oversaw the redesign as well as the first issue’s editorial, while helping to overhaul the publication’s web presence. I also worked in partnership with the company’s media sales team to secure advertising and sponsored editorial.

I was commissioned to write a number of in-depth profile features covering the work of the ‘Global Digital Exemplars’. These are internationally recognised NHS providers using digital technology to drive improvements in care quality and efficiency.

I wrote a report for The Economist Intelligence Unit examining the penetration of Mobile Health and Telemedicine in the Arab states of the Persian gulf. The report was commissioned as part of a reading pack by a government client of the EIU.

Mergers & acquisitions reporter (Healthcare),  Mergermarket Group (now known as Acuris)

This staff role involved gathering exclusive news on European M&A deal situations, primarily within the pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors, for an audience of fund managers and investment bankers.

The job also included investigative reporting on equity capital market situations, including initial public offerings, rights issues, and deal financing.

Cultivating contacts in investment banking, deal advisory firms and corporate and competition lawyers were also key to producing relevant news. My reporting was regularly published across four of the company’s news brands:

  • Dealreporter (Risk arbitrage newswire service for fund managers and investment banks)

  • Mergermarket (Forward-looking M&A intelligence for the deal advisory community)

  • Policy and Regulatory Report (Competition law and antitrust newswire service)

  • Biopharm Insight (Biotech and pharma news service aimed at investors)

I was able to break agenda-setting, exclusive health policy stories for an audience of senior health sector leaders.

My extensive contacts book spanning policy makers, NHS leaders, industry sources, and academics allowed me to break stories covering a multitude of issues facing the NHS.

My investigative journalism resulted in parliamentary questions and an Early Day Motion being filed by a group of MPs.

My work was picked up nationally by the likes of BBC Newsnight, The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and The Independent.

Over the course of my time at HSJ I worked my way up to become senior reporter.

Online editorial assistant, Prospect Magazine

I was drafted in to run this prestigious magazine’s website following the abrupt departure of its full-time online editor.

Reporting to the magazine’s deputy editor, I took over all the role’s responsibilities. These included:

  • Editing and writing articles;

  • Commissioning blog articles for a site with 150,000 unique monthly visitors;

  • Search engine optimization;

  • Rapidly and engagingly updating the publication’s social media channels; and

  • Writing news based on lobby briefings and reporting on policy announcements.

This placement gave me the opportunity to do a large amount of original reporting, resulting in nine bylined stories including a front-page lead.

I interviewed a number of public figures for stories, including the City Mayor of Salford.

Other tasks: pitching stories, assisting senior reporters with data-heavy research and live-blogging from council meetings.
